Belgium’s BTL (short for Beyond The Labyrinth) resurfaces with fresh momentum and a sharpened identity. A shorter band name, a simplified logo, and a renewed musical direction mark what the group considers a renewed chapter — not a rebranding, but a realignment.
Their latest single, ‘My Favorite Mistake’, is the first fully original track to feature vocalist Johan Lotigiers, who joined the band in 2024. Johan’s blues-rooted, soulful style brings a looser, more playful edge to BTL’s classic rock foundation — think early Whitesnake, Deep Purple, with a touch of Louis Prima charm.
‘My Favorite Mistake’ wasn’t born from a guitar riff or lyric sheet. It started in a garage, with Johan recording a spontaneous scat vocal idea into his phone — a jazzy, bluesy phrase drenched in concrete reverb.The looped vocal became the song’s rhythmic backbone.
Guitarist Geert Fieuw remembers reacting with: “Prima, Louis!” — a now-iconic moment among band members, nodding to the wild showmanship of Louis Prima and The Jungle Book.
That energy carried into the studio version: a rock track with groove, swagger, Hammond organ fire, and a cheeky “More Cowbell” wink.
The accompanying music video captures the band’s natural chemistry and lighthearted stage presence. It’s not a narrative clip — just a band enjoying what they do best.No filters. No gimmicks. Just five seasoned musicians, with a sixth member — their beloved van Mariette-De-Camionnette — stealing the intro.
De Vlaamse ‘Classic Rock’ band BTL met Johan Lotigiers als zanger lanceert het zelfgeschreven ‘My Favorite Mistake’ als nieuwe single!
Rockliefhebbers kennen BTL wellicht nog onder de naam Beyond The Labyrinth. De band koos bewust voor een verkorte naam, maar belangrijker is hun nieuwe bezetting: zanger Johan Lotigiers vervoegde de band in juli 2024.
Na een heropname van een bestaand nummer, is er nu een gloednieuwe single waarin Johan zijn artistieke ei kwijt kan. Met ‘My Favorite Mistake’ laat BTL horen wat er gebeurt als ervaring en spelplezier samenkomen.
Sommige nummers beginnen met een riff, andere met een tekst… maar ‘My Favorite Mistake’ begon in een garage. Johan Lotigiers scatte een jazzy idee in op zijn telefoon, met de galm van beton als akoestische partner. Die opnames werden de basis van een bluesy groove — inclusief een loop van het originele scat-fragment.
“Prima, Louis!” grapte gitarist Geert Fieuw, en zo was ook de eerste inside joke geboren: een knipoog naar Louis Primaen The Jungle Book.
Uit het speelse begin groeide de zin: “Out of all the errors that I used to make, you are my favorite mistake.” De song bouwt verder op een stuwende ritmesectie, funky latin vibes, een subtiele “More Cowbell”-knipoog en vurige Hammondpartijen. Classic rock met karakter — BTL op z’n best, en Johan als geboren frontman.
De videoclip vertaalt de energie van de song in beeld. Johan’s charisma spat ervan af, en zelfs de rest van de band laat zich volledig gaan. De hoofdrol? Die is voor Mariette-De-Camionnette – de zesde BTL’er op wielen, herkenbaar aan haar BTL-ROCK nummerplaat.
Geen video die zichzelf te serieus neemt — zet ‘m groot, draai het volume open en geniet mee.
Wie Helmut Lotti’s rockuitstapjes gevolgd heeft, weet dat Johan daarin een grote inspirator was. Op het album Heart Rock zingen de broers samen ‘Breaking The Law’. Helmut zei daarover: “Wat ligt er dichter bij je hart dan met je broer te zingen? Johan krijgt van die onmenselijke schreeuwen uit zijn strot – hij klinkt bitser en ruiger dan ik.”
Ook op het BTL-concert van 22 maart in Antwerpen dook Helmut onverwacht op het podium. Luminous Dash schreef er een lovende recensie over.

A song in which the born entertainer Johan can fully indulge himself-BTL at its best.
